To automatically update the game to the latest build, the third-party OpenRCT2 Launcher is used (link below). OpenRCT2 has two release branches: the "Develop" branch, which is updated up to multiple times a day with builds that incorporate new features and changes, but may be unstable and the "Release" branch, which is updated every few months with a stable build of the game that incorporates the changes and additions of all builds released in the "Develop" branch since the previous "Release" build.ĭue to game-breaking bugs being fixed relatively quickly by the development team on "Develop" branch builds, most of the community plays OpenRCT2 using the latest build in the "Develop" branch.

OpenRCT2 is available for Microsoft Windows (Vista and higher Windows XP support was dropped since v0.0.5 ), Linux, macOS, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and Android. A new object and save format for OpenRCT2 is currently in testing, which will significantly raise these limits, and will also bolster support for importing savegames from RCT1 and RCTC. Unless otherwise noted, most information on this wiki about RCT2 directly applies to OpenRCT2 as well.īecause OpenRCT2 currently uses the same save format as RCT2, some hardcoded limits are still in place, such as 255 rides and shop/stalls in a park or 1,000 guests in a queue line. OpenRCT2 aims to continue where RCT2 left off, making it an update to RCT2 in a similar way RCT2 acted as one to RCT1, or how Loopy Landscapes acted as one towards the base installation of RCT1. On 15 October 2015, this process was finished, making the game independent (except for graphics, sounds and objects), and easier to fix bugs and to port to other systems.

Replacing these functions bit by bit with own code in a more usable programming language was a pivotal project of the developers. In order to keep the game playable and testing easier, OpenRCT2 called into the original RCT2.EXE for functions it did not yet have itself. Development of OpenRCT2 was started on 2 April 2014 by Ted 'IntelOrca' John, with the project making steady development progress due to the efforts of other volunteers contributing towards its development.
